Is itfree?

Yes. FensterDocks is 100% free and open source. Why share it? Because useful software should be usable, inspectable, and easy to learn from.

Why FensterDocksworks

It gives you a desktop organization layer that stays visual, rule-driven, and practical instead of forcing everything back into hidden folders.

Two overlay types for two different jobs

Use a plain Fenster for preview, grouping, rules, and manual pinning. Use a Fenster Folder when you want a real folder-backed container that can mirror contents and receive moved items.

Scope a Fenster to Desktop, Downloads, or any folder

Right-click the Desktop or a folder background in Explorer to create a new Fenster in that source scope. Then filter it by text or category without losing direct access to the real files.

Combine rule categories, manual pinning, and fast drag and drop

Use categories like All, Applications, Documents, Media, or Folders. Add name rules with “|” for OR and “&” for AND. Then manually pin or drag items where you want them. You can also hold Ctrl and scroll inside a Fenster to resize its icons instantly.

Honest notes

FensterDocks is already useful today, but this release is still early and direct about its current limits.

01

Yes. It already works as a real Windows desktop utility with installer, tray icon, Explorer integration, rules, and persistent overlays.
02

No. Files should not be moved without explicit user action. Preview Fenster are for grouping, and folder-backed Fenster are for real container workflows.
03

Yes. FensterDocks is 100% free and open source. Sharing is caring, and the project is also published so people can inspect the work, learn from it, and use it.
04

Transparent WPF overlays can still show minor left or top resize artifacts. The installer is also not code-signed yet, so Windows may warn.
05

Yes. A plain Fenster can be scoped to Desktop, Downloads, or any folder background you right-click in Explorer.
